Cultured stone is lighter than natural stone, but the installation of manufactured stone is similar to the installation of natural stone. Cultured stone creates an ornamental accent for outdoor areas but is typically more expensive than natural stone because of the manufacturing process. Properly installed, culture stone can last several decades. Improperly installed with weak or dried out mortar, cultured stone will fall away from the wall. Install stacked stone to cover walls and fences with little preparation and a few masonry tools.

Made from one of the hardest minerals on earth, quartz countertops are arguably the most durable option for kitchens. They’re also some of the most eye-catching. They come in a wide variety of colors, including fire-engine red and apple green, as well as earthy browns, blacks, and creams, with sparkles and veining for the look of granite or marble. But unlike natural-stone slabs, which are mined, these slabs are engineered in a factory. Their primary ingredient is ground quartz (about 93 percent), combined with polyester resins to bind it and pigments to give it color. For some designs, small amounts of recycled glass or metallic flecks are added to the mix. The resins also help make these counters stain and scratch resistant—and nonporous, so they never need to be sealed. Compare that with granite, the reigning king of high-end countertops, which typically requires a new protective top coat at least once a year.

The strong, tough appearance of granite tile flooring belies the soft touch it requires. This resilient stone needs only a damp mop and mild dish soap to restore its luster, making it a low-maintenance feature in your home. When cleaning a granite tile floor, be careful not to slip on the wet stone, as granite becomes very slippery when wet.

Install a cement backer board over the surface you are tiling. Cement backer board is sturdier than drywall, and will also smooth out an uneven surface. Attach the backer board to the surface with flat head masonry screws.

While granite is extremely dense, it can be damaged by repeated exposure to dirt, spills and stains. Check and clean the wall before beginning work, to ensure a smooth working surface. Use a duster, spackling paste and putty knife as necessary.

Clean the stone well with a stone cleaner. Most stone cleansers are available in spray bottles. Spray the cleaner directly onto the stone and buff it dry with a lint-free cloth.

Fillings

The pits are part of travertine’s inherent beauty, but you may prefer a smoother finish, which does not welcome and trap dirt and crumbs. To eliminate these natural pits, manufacturers fill them. The filler varies by fabricator but is most often either epoxy, a dust and resin mix or colored cement.

Pebbles is the incidental when mining yellow sand. And it gets its name because of the shape. As natural stone, pebble stone is taken from sand stone, which experienced the crustal movement millions of years ago. It was flushed by flood, textured and friction by running water.
